Retargeting almost always shows a better return than prospecting. That doesn’t mean it deserves more budget.
Why retargeting looks better
Retargeting reaches people who already know you. Many of them would have bought anyway. Platform-reported return includes those sales, so retargeting often gets credit for demand that prospecting created.
Judge each stage by its own job
- Prospecting: reaching new people at a sensible cost and filling the retargeting pool. Watch new-customer acquisition, not just ROAS.
- Retargeting: converting warm audiences efficiently. Watch frequency so you don’t over-serve a small audience.
Let audience size set the limit
Retargeting budget is capped by how many people you’re bringing in. If your warm audience is small, extra retargeting spend just raises frequency.
Test creative where it matters
Most creative testing belongs in prospecting, where the audience doesn’t know you yet. Retargeting creative can focus on objections, offers and reasons to act now.
Prospecting creates the demand that retargeting gets credit for.
