When volume is scarce, qualification is the win

Local service businesses often face the hardest version of paid search: few people searching, many competitors bidding, and high click costs.

Don’t chase volume

When search volume is low, broadening targeting brings in clicks from people outside your area or outside your service. You pay for them, and they don’t convert.

Research for local intent

Look for searches that include location, urgency, or a specific service. Long-tail phrases have less volume but much clearer intent.

Study competitors

See who’s bidding, what they promise, and where your offer is stronger. That shapes your ad copy.

Keep negatives current

Small accounts are especially sensitive to wasted spend. Review search terms often and exclude anything outside your service area or offer.

Measure qualification, not just leads

Set up GA4 conversion tracking, then ask which leads were actually right for the business. For Ashley Artisans, this approach kept more than 90% of leads qualified.
