Google Ads Expert for tech brands
Google Ads for consumer tech and robotics brands.
Google Ads built for products people need to understand before they buy: demand creation and demand capture in separate campaigns, each with its own budget and success measure.
How do consumer tech brands grow with Google Ads?
When a product needs explaining, Google Ads has to do two jobs: teach new audiences what the product does (YouTube, Demand Gen, top-of-funnel Search) and capture people already searching (Shopping, product-specific Performance Max, remarketing). Running those jobs in separate campaigns took Petoi from a 2.0 to a 4.1 ROAS while purchases grew from 31 to 165.

Sound familiar?
The problems consumer tech and robotics brands bring to me most often, and what I do about each one.
The problem
“People don't search for our product, because they don't know it exists yet.”
Search can only capture demand that exists. For a new kind of product, the searches are about the problem or use case, not your product name.
How I fix it
Create demand, then capture it
Top-of-funnel Search on use-case and problem phrases, plus YouTube and Demand Gen to show the product working, with their own budgets so they aren’t judged like bottom-funnel campaigns.
The problem
“Performance Max runs everything, and we can't see what's working.”
When one campaign carries the whole account, the algorithm decides where spend goes, and you lose visibility into which products and audiences drive sales.
How I fix it
Give PMax narrower jobs
Product-specific Performance Max and Shopping-only asset groups, with demand creation moved into campaigns you can see and control. That is how Petoi’s account was rebuilt.
The problem
“Our clicks are expensive, and most visitors leave without buying.”
Broad, poorly matched traffic costs more and converts less, especially when visitors land on a page that assumes they already understand the product.
How I fix it
Match the click to the stage
Each funnel stage gets its own keywords, ads and landing experience. In Petoi’s account, average CPC fell from $2.30 to $1.00 after the rebuild.
The problem
“Buyers compare our specs with competitors and go elsewhere.”
Tech buyers research models, features and prices. If your listings and pages don’t answer those questions, the comparison is lost.
How I fix it
Make specs visible and searchable
Feed titles and attributes that carry model, key features and compatibility, Search on comparison phrases where it makes sense, and product pages that answer the questions buyers ask.
The problem
“Sales spike at holiday time, then fall off a cliff.”
Gift-driven categories see demand concentrate in a few weeks. If audiences and campaigns are only built when the peak starts, you miss much of it.
How I fix it
Plan the season in advance
Build remarketing pools and test creative before the peak, ramp budgets with demand, and plan what happens after it so spend doesn’t run on after demand drops.
The problem
“We can't tell whether YouTube or Display did anything.”
Upper-funnel campaigns rarely get last-click credit, so they look like waste in standard reports and get cut.
How I fix it
Report by funnel stage
Each stage is judged on its own job: reach and engaged visitors at the top, assisted conversions in the middle, purchases and conversion value at the bottom, and all of it against store revenue.

What's different about Google Ads for consumer tech
Why tech and robotics accounts need their own approach.
The product often needs explaining
Many buyers need to understand what the product does before they will consider buying it.
Demand may not exist yet
For new categories, search volume is about problems and use cases, not product names.
Buyers compare specs
Model, features, compatibility and price decide the shortlist, so feeds and pages need detail.
Seasonality is sharp
Gift-led products see demand concentrate around holidays, which needs planning ahead.
Video does a lot of work
Seeing the product in action answers questions that text can’t, which makes YouTube useful for demand creation.
Considered purchases take time
Higher prices and unfamiliar products mean longer journeys and more return visits.
The funnel I build for consumer tech
How Petoi’s account was structured, and the job of each layer.
| Stage | Campaigns | Its job | What I measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top of funnel | Top-of-funnel Search, YouTube, Demand Gen, prospecting Display | Teach new audiences what the product does | Reach, engaged visitors, cost per new visitor |
| Mid funnel | In-market audiences, product-specific PMax, Shopping-only asset groups | Qualify interest and show the right product | Add-to-cart rate, assisted conversions |
| Bottom of funnel | Remarketing, brand Search, Shopping | Close the sale with people ready to buy | Purchases, conversion value, ROAS |
How I build Google Ads for a tech brand
Each step depends on the one before.
01
Tracking and Merchant Center
Purchase tracking that matches your store, and a feed with model and feature detail.
02
Audit where spend goes
Find out what Performance Max and other campaigns are really buying.
03
Separate demand creation
Move education into its own campaigns and budgets.
04
Narrow PMax and Shopping
Product-specific jobs for the campaigns that capture demand.
05
Report by stage
Judge each layer on its own job, and all of it against store revenue.
Who this is for
An honest filter, so we both save time.
A good fit if
- You sell consumer electronics, robotics, gadgets or STEM products online
- Your product needs some explaining before people buy
- You want visibility into what Performance Max is doing
- You can share Google Ads, Merchant Center and store order data
Probably not a fit if
- You only want brand search managed
- You need results without access to tracking or order data
- You want every campaign judged on last-click ROAS
- You are looking for the cheapest possible management fee

Questions about Google Ads for consumer tech brands
Does Google Ads work for products people don't know exist yet?
Yes, but not through product-name searches alone. Use-case Search, YouTube and Demand Gen create awareness, and Shopping and remarketing capture it. Petoi’s account grew from 31 to 165 purchases after this split.
Should a tech brand rely on Performance Max?
Not for the whole account. Performance Max works better with narrow, product-specific jobs, while demand creation runs in campaigns you can see and control.
Is YouTube worth it for consumer tech?
Often, because seeing a product work answers questions text can’t. Judge it on reach and engaged visitors rather than last-click sales, and run it with its own budget.
How do you prepare for holiday peaks?
Build remarketing audiences and test creative before demand rises, ramp budgets as searches increase, and plan the wind-down so spend doesn’t outlast demand.
What should a tech product feed include?
Brand, model, product type and the key features or compatibility details people search for, plus identifiers like GTINs where they exist.
How do you measure upper-funnel campaigns?
By stage: reach and engaged visitors at the top, assisted conversions in the middle, and purchases and conversion value at the bottom, compared with total store revenue.
Do I need Meta Ads too?
Meta can help show a product in action to new audiences. See Meta Ads for ecommerce for how the two channels split the work.
